EV Charger Installation: What NC Homeowners Need to Know

Panel capacity, permit requirements, charger brands, and what the actual installation process looks like from a licensed NC electrician.

EV charger installation has become a significant part of our work at 310 Construction. More homeowners in Union County, Cabarrus County, and the Charlotte corridor are driving electric vehicles, and most of them want to charge overnight at home instead of relying on public stations. The technology in the charger itself is straightforward. The electrical work behind it is where the real decisions get made, and getting it wrong shows up as a tripped breaker every morning, a warm circuit, or a failed inspection. I spent twelve and a half years running industrial automation at Michelin before I started doing this work full time, so I look at every EV circuit the same way I looked at a motor feed on the plant floor: size the conductor for the continuous load, protect it correctly, and verify it before anyone energizes it.

Level 1 vs. Level 2 charging

Level 1 charging uses a standard 120V outlet. Every EV ships with a Level 1 cable in the trunk, so it costs you nothing to start. It works, but it adds roughly four to five miles of range per hour of charging. On a 120V, 12A circuit you are pulling about 1.4 kW, and that math does not change no matter which car you own. For a daily commute under 30 miles, plugging in every night gets you by. For anyone with a longer drive, a second EV in the household, or a battery over 70 kWh, Level 1 means waking up to a car that never quite filled up.

Level 2 charging runs on 240V, the same voltage as a clothes dryer or an electric range. Depending on charger amperage and the vehicle’s onboard charger, it adds 20 to 40 miles of range per hour. A 40A charger delivers roughly 7.7 kW; a 48A unit delivers about 11.5 kW. The vehicle’s onboard charger sets the ceiling, so a car that only accepts 7.7 kW will not charge faster on a 48A unit, but a future vehicle might. Most homeowners who go Level 2 stop thinking about charging entirely. They plug in at night and the car is full by morning regardless of how far they drove that day.

What the electrical work involves

A Level 2 install requires a dedicated 240V circuit running from your electrical panel to the charger location. The National Electrical Code treats EV charging as a continuous load, which means the circuit has to be sized at 125% of the charger’s rated current. A 32A charger needs a 40A breaker and conductors rated for it. A 40A charger needs a 50A circuit. A 48A charger needs a 60A breaker fed by 6 AWG copper. We run 6 AWG copper on most 48A jobs and 8 AWG on 40A jobs, and we do not split the difference to save wire, because an undersized conductor on a continuous load runs hot and degrades the insulation over time.

The process at 310 Construction looks like this:

  • Panel evaluation. We check whether your panel has a free breaker slot and, more importantly, enough available load capacity for the new circuit. Most 200A panels in Weddington, Matthews, and the newer Cabarrus County subdivisions have room. A 100A panel may or may not, depending on what else is already running.
  • Load calculation. We run the calculation per NEC Article 220, adding up your existing loads (HVAC, water heater, range, dryer) against the service rating. A 48A charger adds a 60A continuous load to the panel, and the math has to leave headroom. This is the step most online quote tools skip, and it is the one inspectors actually check.
  • Circuit routing. We determine the cleanest path from the panel to the garage or charging location. That path sets the wire gauge (longer runs need an upsize to fight voltage drop), whether we need conduit, and the final cost. A 90-foot run to a detached garage is a different job than a 15-foot drop to an attached one.
  • Permit pull. Every NC county requires an electrical permit for a new 240V circuit. We handle the application and coordinate the inspection so you are not on the phone with the county building department.
  • Installation and test. We run the circuit, mount the hardwired unit or install the outlet if you want a plug-in setup, torque every termination to spec, and test the full circuit under load before the inspector arrives.

What the permit and inspection process looks like in NC counties

People are often surprised that a single 240V circuit needs a permit, but it does, and the process differs slightly by county. We pull these regularly, so we know what each one wants before we apply.

In Union County, the permit is filed through the county’s building inspections department and covers the new EV circuit as an electrical alteration. The county wants the load calculation on file when the service is at or near capacity, and the inspector checks conductor sizing, breaker rating, GFCI protection where required, and the torque on the panel terminations. Weddington, Matthews, and Monroe addresses all route through the Union County process, and turnaround on the inspection is usually a few business days after the work is done.

In Cabarrus County, the electrical permit is handled by the county’s central permitting office, and the inspection requirements mirror Union County’s: correct breaker for the conductor, proper torque, and a load calculation for tighter panels. Concord and Harrisburg homes fall under this jurisdiction. The county schedules the inspection after we mark the work ready, and the charger cannot be put into regular use until that inspection passes.

In Stanly County, where our Norwood home base sits, the permit goes through the county building inspections office. Albemarle, Norwood, Oakboro, and the surrounding addresses all run through this office. The inspector here looks at the same fundamentals, and because a lot of homes in the area are on older 100A or 150A services, the load calculation tends to matter more often than it does in the newer Union County subdivisions. We scope that during the walk-through so there are no surprises at inspection.

Across all three counties, the timeline is the same in shape: permit applied for, circuit installed, county notified, inspection passed, charger energized. The inspection adds a day or two, and that is by design. An on-record install protects your homeowner’s insurance and shows up clean on any future property disclosure.

Common wiring problems we find during EV charger jobs

An EV charger job is also a panel audit, because we have to open the panel and put it under a new continuous load. That is where pre-existing problems show up. Here is what we find most often.

Undersized wire from prior DIY work. The most common one is a homeowner or handyman who ran a 30A or 40A circuit on a wire that was never rated for it, then put a bigger breaker in front of it. We have pulled covers and found 10 AWG wire protected by a 50A breaker feeding an existing dryer or shop outlet. That wire will carry continuous EV current as a fire risk, not a charging circuit. When we find it, we replace the conductor with the correct gauge rather than build a new circuit next to a hazard.

Double-tapped breakers. We regularly open panels and find two conductors landed under a single breaker lug that was only listed for one. It is a quick way for a previous installer to add a circuit without freeing up a slot, and it is a defect every inspector flags. Before we add the EV circuit, we correct the double-tap, either with a properly rated breaker or by adding a tandem where the panel allows it.

In that case we add a subpanel, use a panel-mounted load management device that shares capacity between the EV charger and the existing loads, or recommend a panel upgrade if the bus itself is the limit. The right answer depends on the load calculation, not a guess, and we walk you through the options with the cost of each before we touch anything.

Which charger brands we install

We install Tesla Wall Connector, ChargePoint Home Flex, JuiceBox 40/48, Emporia, Grizzl-E, and any hardwired or plug-in Level 2 unit. We also install bare NEMA 14-50 and 6-50 outlets for homeowners who want to plug in their own charger or future-proof the circuit for a vehicle they have not bought yet. A 14-50 outlet on a properly sized 50A circuit gives you flexibility, though a hardwired 48A unit is the better choice if you want the full charging speed and a cleaner install.

Brand choice matters less than most people expect. What matters is that the unit is listed for residential use, that the charger amperage matches the circuit capacity we are installing, and that the unit is mounted at a height and location that makes daily use practical. We have seen chargers installed where the cable will not reach the car’s port without crossing a walkway. We measure the parking spot and the port location before we set the mount.

Does my panel need an upgrade for an EV charger?

Often no. Most 200A panels in homes built in the last 25 years have capacity for a 40A or 50A EV circuit even with an existing HVAC system, electric water heater, and range. We run the load calculation to confirm before recommending any panel work, because nobody should pay for a service upgrade they do not need. If the panel is a 100A service and the existing loads are already heavy, which is common in older Albemarle and Norwood homes, a panel upgrade or a load management device may be necessary as part of the EV charger install. EV charger installation questions from NC homeowners

How much does Level 2 EV charger installation cost in NC?
Most residential Level 2 EV charger installs in central NC cover the electrical work, not counting the charger unit itself. That covers the permit, the circuit run, and the installation on a panel with room and a reasonable run length. Longer conduit runs to a detached garage, a panel that needs a load management device, or a service upgrade add cost. We scope all of it during the walk-through and run the load calculation before quoting a number, so what you see is what you pay.
Can I get a tax credit for a Level 2 EV charger in NC?
There is a federal tax credit for EV charging equipment that covers 30% of the cost of the charger and installation up to a cap, and it currently applies to homes located in eligible census tracts, which includes a lot of rural and non-urban areas across Union, Cabarrus, and Stanly County. North Carolina does not have a separate statewide residential charger credit, though Duke Energy has run EV charging programs and rebates from time to time worth checking. What charger amperage is right for my vehicle?
Match the charger to your car’s onboard charger, not the other way around. Most current EVs accept either 7.7 kW (a 40A charger on a 50A circuit) or 11.5 kW (a 48A charger on a 60A circuit). If your vehicle only accepts 7.7 kW, a 48A unit will not charge it any faster, so a 40A install is the practical choice and costs less. If you expect to buy a faster-charging vehicle later, we can run the 60A circuit now and set a 48A charger so you are covered. We check your specific vehicle’s spec before recommending the amperage.
Can I install a Level 2 charger in a detached garage?
Yes. A detached garage install requires running the 240V circuit from your main panel to the structure, either through underground conduit or an overhead service drop depending on local code and site conditions. Longer runs sometimes call for an upsized conductor to keep voltage drop in check, and if the garage has its own subpanel we may feed it from there. It costs more than an attached garage install because of the distance and the trenching or aerial work, but it is a common job for us across Union County and Stanly County.
Do I need a permit to install an EV charger in North Carolina?
Yes. Any new 240V circuit requires an electrical permit in NC, and the requirement applies in Union County, Cabarrus County, and Stanly County alike. We pull the permit as part of the install and coordinate the county inspection. The inspection adds a day or two to the timeline, but it protects you with an on-record legal install that satisfies your homeowner’s insurance and any future property disclosure when you sell.
What if I want to install the charger myself?
You can purchase the charger unit yourself and we will install the circuit and mount the unit. That is a common arrangement and there is nothing wrong with it. Wiring the 240V circuit yourself without a licensed electrician and a permit is not something we recommend, both because of the fire risk on an undersized or improperly terminated continuous-load circuit and because the permit requirement in NC exists regardless of who owns the charger. An unpermitted circuit can also create a problem at closing if a buyer’s inspector flags it.
