Charlotte’s older residential belt runs from the 1950s and 60s brick ranches out in east Charlotte and off Central Avenue, through the mid-century streets of Plaza Midwood and Sheffield Park, and into the 1970s builds around Idlewild and Windsor Park. Most of those homes landed a 100A service, and a fair number still carry the original fuse panel or an early breaker box that made sense for the loads of the day: window units, a gas furnace, and a modest appliance set. What lives in those same homes now is a different animal. Heat pumps, electric ranges, EV chargers, finished basements, home offices, and additions all draw against a service that was never sized for them.

The calc adds up your actual demand against the panel’s capacity using NEC Article 220, the same standard the Mecklenburg County inspector works from. If your service has real headroom, you hear that plainly and you keep your money. If it does not, you get a specific recommendation: a service upgrade to 200A or 400A, a load management device for one heavy appliance, or a sub-panel where that is the cleaner answer.
The upgrade itself covers the new main panel and breakers, the service entrance conductors that run from Duke Energy’s meter into the panel, a meter base upgrade when Duke’s standards require it, the grounding electrode system, and all bonding. The permit is pulled through the City of Charlotte or Mecklenburg County, and the inspection is scheduled and coordinated. The day Duke Energy re-pulls the service drop, your power comes back on with the capacity a modern Charlotte home needs.
There is a difference between a panel that is genuinely undersized and a panel that is simply full. On a lot of the east Charlotte and Sheffield Park ranches Bobby walks, the 100A service still has real headroom on paper, but the panel ran out of breaker slots after a basement finish or a bathroom addition, and someone stacked tandem breakers or double-lugged a bus to make room. That is a code and safety problem, not a capacity one, and the honest answer there is often a sub-panel rather than a full service upgrade. The load calculation is what separates the two, and it is why Bobby runs it before quoting instead of defaulting every older Charlotte home to a 200A sell. When the calc does call for more service, the number it lands on, 200A or 400A, is driven by the heat pump, the range, the EV charger, and the additions the home actually carries, not by a round figure that sounds safe.
