A Mooresville lighting job usually starts outside. Somebody wants the walk down to the dock lit so guests are not feeling for the edge of a step in the dark, and by the end of the conversation the list has grown: graze the seawall so the stonework reads at night, uplight the two big hardwoods on the lawn, put a little warm light under the boathouse eave. That is a good list. It is also a list that punishes cheap parts, because everything on it lives twenty feet from open water.
The first thing Bobby changes on most of these plans is the metal. Cast aluminum path lights are what shows up in the kit at the home center, and around Lake Norman they pit at the lens gasket within a couple of seasons, take on water, and quit. Solid brass and copper cost more up front, patina into something that looks better with age, and keep working. On dock approaches he uses wet-location rated fittings and junctions rather than damp-location gear, because spray and irrigation overspray are not theoretical here.
The second thing that changes is the wiring math. Lake lots are long. A run from the transformer at the house down to the seawall can be 150 or 200 feet, and a 12-volt system bleeds voltage across that distance. What you get is fixtures near the house looking crisp and fixtures at the water looking brown and dying. Bobby sizes the conductor for the actual run and specs a multi-tap transformer so the far end feeds off a 13, 14, or 15 volt tap. It is a load-and-drop calculation, the same kind he ran on plant drives for twelve and a half years at Michelin, applied to a lawn.
Inside, the recurring problem is different. Lake homes here tend to have vaulted great rooms and a lake-facing wall that is mostly glass, and a single row of downlights does nothing good in either. A twenty-foot ceiling needs beam spreads chosen for the throw distance, or you get bright pools on the floor and a dark upper volume that makes the room feel like a cave with a chandelier in it. The fix is layers on separate zones: ambient from aimable trims, task light where people actually read and cook, and something washing the upper walls so the height reads as height.
Then there is the glass. A window wall that looks like the lake all day turns into a black mirror at night, and every downlight near it shows up as a reflection sitting out over the water. Pulling the interior light back off the glass, aiming the nearest fixtures at side walls instead of the floor in front of it, and putting that zone on its own dimmer takes most of it away. A little exterior light on the lake side takes away the rest, because the eye stops seeing the room bounced back at it and starts seeing the yard.
The last piece is the part people notice without being able to name it. Bulbs get replaced one at a time over the years and a house ends up with three color temperatures running at once, so the kitchen is blue, the den is orange, and nothing looks intentional. Closer in, around Langtree and Mount Mourne, more of the calls are interior, usually a great room that has been lit by four downlights since the builder left. Downtown Mooresville brings the older housing stock, where the question is often whether a fixture can be added at all without opening a plaster ceiling, and the answer is usually yes with the right remodel housing and a patient wire route.
One thing holds across all of them: Duke Energy powers this whole area, and a lighting plan that adds meaningful load gets checked against what the panel can carry before anything is ordered. Most lighting jobs are small draw and this is a non-issue. Now and then, on a big exterior plan with several transformers and a control system, the honest answer is that the panel is already full and that conversation is better had at the walk-through than after the fixtures show up.
